What do we mean by uninsured are "the ones paying the highest price?
The dark secret of our healthcare system is called "Cost-Shifting." Because Medicare pays a very low rate, and every insurance company negotiates low rates - for example 80% of charges for their enrollees, hospitals will adjust or shift list pricing up so that the 80 percent will still be at full price. This makes sense until you think about the uninsured or underinsured with high deductibles - they end up paying the artificially shifted list price.
Now that you know about this, what can you do about it?
At most metropolitan hospitals, they will adjust your pricing ONLY if you ask for it. Then, if you pay cash (credit card) up front - you can also get the associated discount.
Why should one also get the cash discount when the price already got adjusted?
Because cash is king. Paying cash means that you just helped the hospital manage its accounts receivables and can immediately start earning interest on your payment.
If everyone paid cash up front - or even used a credit card at 14% - we would not need coding and billing divisions within the hospital, clearinghouses, insurance companies, etc. Healthcare cost in our country can be reduced by as much as 40 percent!
Imagine $60 office visits to your doctor. $40 to see a nurse practitioner. $500 dollar MRI's, etc, etc. Unfortunately, savings are rarely extended out to the actual consumers. Net revenue just increases for the providers...
